The former US president Bill Clinton is taking considerable interest in the Gujarat earthquake relief effort. He had earlier spoken directly to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and sought his advice on how best to organize relief in America.
According to a report in the Telegraph newspaper, the former president has now gone a step further and taken the initiative to set up a country-wide organisation to mobilize aid. The new forum which is to be called Americans for Indian Relief and Reconstruction.
The former President's initiative will hopefully create a healthy competition between the official aid authorized by the Republican Bush government. The US House of Representatives yesterday passed a resolution expressing sympathy and support for India in the aftermath of the quake and called for the US aid effort to be expanded. The United States also said that it was donating a further US$4 million bringing its total emergency relief package to US$9 million.
