As you are all well aware, Gujarat has been struck by a calamity of gargantuan proportion. The earthquake that struck on Republic day 2001 measured 7.9 on the Richter scale and is the most powerful earthquake in Independent India's history. Considering the magnitude of the disaster, it is difficult to even estimate the actual loss of life, even official figures put the death toll between 25,000 and 100,000.
As Non Resident Indians, we are physically far away from the disaster site. In some countries poor media coverage further insulates us from the magnitude of this catastrophic event. Being far removed from the calamity, and often engrossed in our frenzied lives, we find little time to reflect on the disaster and the action that needs to be taken. Then there is also the skepticism if we can indeed make a difference, if our efforts will actually find its way through India's well-known bureaucratic maze. However, the task before the nation and its people is enormous. This is not a time for cynicism but a time for positive action. There are organizations and individuals providing yeoman service, and their efforts need support.
NRIOL is working with India Network Foundation to channel resources for the relief effort. The contributions will be used to provide immediate humanitarian help in remote areas and to help elementary schools in rural areas organized directly by INF staff. Contributions can be made over the Internet through India Network's secure server site.
Our prayers are with affected families. Let us all do our bit to help alleviate their suffering.
