US President George W Bush has offered his condolences over the earthquake which has killed over 1,000 people, media reports say.
In a statement read out by White House spokesman, Ari Fleischer, Mr Bush said: "I am saddened by the news of the tragic earthquake centered in India's Gujarat state this morning. I extend my condolences and those of the American people to the families of the many victims to the cities and villages of Gujarat and elsewhere."
The spokesman added that the condolences were also extended to the victims in neighbouring Pakistan.
The US has also offered assistance - the statement added "we stand ready to assist as needed and desired by the governments."
