More than 1,000 people could have died in Gujarat in an earthquake that struck on Friday morning according to the Union Home Minister Lal Krishna Advani.
Initial reports from Gujarat said Ahmedabad, Surat and the coastal town of Bhuj bore the brunt of the quake. The earthquake measured 6.9 on the Richter Scale and the epicentre was 20 km north-east of Bhuj. Reports of powerful jolts were also received from Jamnagar, Bhavnagar, Dhoraji, Jamjodhpur and Gondal.
Indian media reports indicate that the states of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry also felt the tremors.
