Peter Mandelson who is UK's Northern Ireland Secretary and a close associate of Britain's Prime Minister Tony Blair has resigned due to controversy surrounding his involvement with the affairs of a prominent NRI family.
The NRI family in the middle of the controversy is the well-known Hinduja brothers - Srichand and Gopichand who are based in London, Prakash in Geneva and Ashok in Bombay. The assets of the family are unofficially estimated to be $8 billion. They have substantial stake in global finance, telecommunications, film and oil businesses.
Mr. Mandelson who has had an important role in the political successes of Tony Blair has been under severe pressure the last few days. He is accused of using the power of his office and position inappropriately to secure UK citizenship to the Hindujas. The Hindujas had recently donated £1m in sponsorship for the Millennium Dome while Mr Mandelson was in charge of the project.
