Ten names from the Indian subcontinent can be found in the most recent list of the 300 richest people in Britain. The Rich report 2001 was released over the weekend and was compiled by the Mail on Sunday magazine in association with the company that makes Gordon’s Gin.
Two Indians are even richer than the queen of England. They are Steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal estimated to be worth £1.2 billion is ranked 17th, while the Hinduja brothers, Gopichand and Srichand with assets worth £800 million are ranked 27th.
The other South Asian names in the list are pharmaceutical kings Bhikhu and Vijay Patel, ranked 126 and valued at £220 million; hotelier Jasminder Singh, ranked 136 and valued at £213 million; electronics magnate Gulu Lalvani, ranked 178 and valued at £170 million; Swraj Paul, ranked 178 and valued at £170 million; fashion retailer Tom Singh, ranked 185 and valued at £169 million; computer software boss, Madan Singh, ranked 222 and valued at £143 million; cash and carry magnate Anwar Perez, ranked 236 and valued at £137 million and industrialist Ratilal Chandaria, ranked 242 and valued at £130 million.
