Indians in Malaysia - "the new underclass"
We are so accustomed to hearing about the successful Indian communities around the world that one often forgets about the not so successful members of the Indian diaspora. A report in the current issue of the AsiaWeek magazine provides some shocking statistics about the Indian community in Malaysia.
The report states that Indians lag behind other ethnic groups in almost all indicators. Even though Indians form just 7% of the total population, they account for 63% of those arrested under the Emergency Ordinance for violent crimes. Indians also constitute 41% of beggars and 20% of child abusers. Indians rank lowest in national elementary-school examinations; about one in every 12 Indian children does not even attend primary school. It is this shocking reality about Indians in Malaysia that has prompted political scientist P. Ramasamy to say that they have become "the new underclass."
