The incoming republican party George W. Bush administration plans to comprehensively review the sanctions imposed against India in the wake of the 1998 nuclear test and consider lifting them soon. This was stated by Secretary of State-designate General Colin Powell to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee during his confirmation proceedings which began on January 18.
"I would see whether it is time to move forward to remove all the remaining sanctions against India and consult his colleagues on the issue," Powell said.
During the course of his confirmation hearing Powell also stated - "We must deal more wisely with the world's largest democracy, soon to be the most populous country in the world,". He further added "India has the potential to keep the peace in the vast Indian Ocean area and its periphery."
