The procedures for getting the H1B - temporary work visa for working in the United States have been made simpler in the US consulates at Mumbai or Chennai. According to an article in the Economic Times there have been many innovative changes in the visa issuing process by the American Consulate General in the two cities. The most significant among them being that all H1B applicants no longer need to appear for interviews.
The report states that the Consulate in Mumbai following in the steps of the Chennai Consulate has recently moved to the drop box system for H1B visas. This implies that all that the applicant needs to do is drop his application with the necessary documents. He can then return later in the day to collect his visa.
The report also provides interesting statistics regarding the issuance of H1B visas last year. The Consulate in Chennai issued the highest with 21,798 H1Bs, while Mumbai was a close second with 18,100 HIBs. New Delhi issued 11,100 H1Bs and Calcutta issued the least at 2,600.
