A British minister has said the UK wants to increase the number of Indian students studying there, media reports say.
Stephen Byers, the British Secretary for Trade and Industry who is currently visiting India, said he wanted to increase the number of Indian students to 9,000 by the year 2005, an increase of 50% on the current figure.
Foreign students pay up to three times the fees that domestic students pay, and increasingly, British universities are turning to other countries for students as a lucrative source of income.
