Mahatma Gandhi was the one person from the 20th century who should have won the Nobel Peace Prize but didn't. According to an AFP report, this sentiment was expressed by the Nobel Institute director Geir Lundestad in an article published in a Norweigen daily Aftenposten.
"In my view, there is one name that is missing from the list of laureates: Mahatma Gandhi, (Norway's) historic link with Britain may have contributed to the fact that Gandhi never won the prize," Lundestad wrote in the article published as the Nobel Prizes turn 100 this year.
According to Lundestad, Gandhi's name was proposed to the Nobel committee on five different occasions. While the Indian peace activist made it as far as the "short list" three times, he never won the prestigious prize. "The Nobel committee had planned to award Gandhi the prize in 1948 but he was assassinated and no prize was given that year," Lundestad explained.
Mother Theresa is the only Indian to have won the Nobel peace prize so far. Although an Albanian by birth, Mother Theresa had become a naturalized Indian citizen when awarded the Nobel peace prize.
