To further cement the long cultural relationship that India shares with Singapore, the President Mr. K.R. Narayanan today presented three ancient stone sculptures to Singapore's Asian Civilisations Museum. The sculptures will be on loan to the museum for 10 years. The loan is significant for both countries as it is the first time India has initiated such a long term loan of artifacts to any country.
The three stone sculptures are a Ganesha, the elephant-headed deity, a Nataraja the six-armed sculpture and a Yogini or the 10-armed mother goddess. The former two sculptures were excavated at Halebid in Karnataka in 1978, while the Yogini was excavated in Vidisha in Madhya Pradesh in 1991.
Meanwhile the Minister for Culture and Tourism, Mr. Ananth Kumar who is accompanying the president on his Singapore visit, told reporters that plans are underway for Indian writers and performers to take part in Singapore's Writers Week and Arts Festival next year.
