An Indian United Nations (UN) veteran, C.R. Garekhan, has been elected as a member of a crucial UN committee that decides on the contentious issue of contribution by member states to the world body. Garekhan was elected to the committee by acclamation Friday.
A former Indian ambassador to the UN, Garekhan served till last year as under-secretary general of the body and was the secretary general's representative to West Bank and Gaza.
Contribution by member countries to UN's annual budget of US $1 billion has turned out to be a controversial issue following the US moves to cut down its contribution from 25 per cent to 22 per cent. That would mean a reduction by $300 million to the UN funds.
India contributes $350,000 annually to the UN.
