A committee headed by APJ Abdul Kalam, scientific advisor to the Indian government, has approved an NRI-initiated plan to establish a US$1 billion Global Institute of Technology along the lines of the IITs, the Deccan Chronicle reports.
The committee’s decision will be sent to the Ministry of Human Resource Development, and the final decision will be taken by a group of ministers led by Murli Manohar Joshi, the minister for science and technology.
Mr Kalam cautioned against turning the GIT into an elitist institution and was quoted as saying that "We welcome the proposal by a group of NRIs since there is a resource constraint on the part of the government. But we do not want the proposed institute to become an elitist establishment charging high fees from students and giving corporate salaries to professors."
