The economies of India and most other South Asian countries are "mostly unfree" except that of Sri Lanka, which qualifies to be termed as mostly free, while Hong Kong's economy is the "freest" in the world.
According to the annual index of economic freedom published by the Conservative Heritage Foundation and the Wall Steet Journal, schizophrenia is the word that describes economic liberty in the Asia-Pacific.
Four of the world's freest economies are in this region - Hong Kong, Singapore, New Zealand and Australia - but Asia-Pacific is home to "six of the most repressed economies - Vietnam, Laos, Burma, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and North Korea," it said.
Singapore was pushed down from first to second place among the free economies because of "increasing evidence of government interference," the report quoting Gerald P O'Driscoll of Heritage and Melanie Kirpatrick of WSJ said.
