We're on the IT bandwagon again - TIME magazine has devoted a cover issue to
India's strength in this field. The introduction to the online version of
the article says, "As the Internet bridges distances, the sleeping giant
seizes the opportunity to create new jobs and wealth."
The article starts off with a story about a 30-year old Master's degree
holder in genetics, who is unable to find a decent job (and therefore, a
bride) on his return to India from the US. He chances on an IT job, and his
future changes.

But before you take off on the theme that India is definitely going to be
the world's next IT superpower, think again. There is an article written by
Jay Dubashi on Indiaworld's website, titled "India has to be built by
Indians alone - Those going abroad can't do it for us." In the article,
Dubashi calls India's IT professionals as "computer coolies" and says there
is little difference between them and the indentured labourers who moved
abroad to work on plantations owned by the British.
He says, "Indians who go out to America will be working for American
companies, not the other way round. Others work for superpowers,
superpowers don't work for others. What we are witnessing is just another
version of the old indentured labour that went out of India in the 19th
century to work for plantations owned by Britishers."
