Asian women are twice as likely to commit suicide than their white
counterparts, the BBC reports. (In the UK, people from the sub-continent are
generally referred to as Asians).
Quoting a study by the University of Surrey, the report says that Asian
women suffer from domestic violence, forced marriages and everyday stress,
but have to cope with these problems alone.
A government-funded video drama is also being launched, to shock Asians into
doing something. The video, to be distributed in mosques, temples and
gurudwaras across the UK, includes scenes of an Asian man battering his
wife.
Balbir Grewal, general secretary of a gurudwara in London, was quoted as
saying, "It's very bad. We're a close-knit community and we care for our
girls. The drama shows us in a very bad light, and the people who've
produced this video are shaming the community by claiming there's a big
problem."
