New Rs 1000 notes bearing Mahatma Gandhi’s picture have been issued by India’s Reserve Bank, media reports say. Until now, Rs 500 was the highest denomination of Indian currency under circulation. The notes which were discontinued 22 years ago, in 1978 to discourage hoarding by black marketeers will be recirculated with additional security features like optically variable ink and micro letters.
The Rs 1000 notes are generally pink in colour, with Gandhi’s photo printed in grey.
