The US Senate has passed legislation to increase the number of H1B visas
issued per year to 200,000, media reports say. This represents a nearly
doubling of the current limit of 115,000.
It's not just the limit that is being upped - the application fee is
expected to be raised from US $500 currently to US $1,000.
Most of the H1B visas are issued to Indians and the Chinese. Technology
companies in the US say that at least 300,000 jobs are going abegging due to
lack of high-tech talent.
A senator was quoted as saying, ""There is overwhelming unanimity that we
must act in this fashion if we are to keep our economy strong."
He added, "The short-term problem is how to fill the key positions
immediately so that we don't lose opportunities to foreign competitors or so
that we don't force American businesses to move offshore to where skilled
workers might live."
