The world's largest animal rights group has threatened to launch a "a potentially devastating campaign against Indian tourism" if the Indian government fails to take satisfactory measures to prevent cruelty to cows, media reports say.
The President of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), Ingrid Newkirk was quoted as saying, "There has not even been one response from the government to our letters. This is unheard of."
PETA officials say that because cow slaughter is illegal in India, corrupt authorities take bribes to transport cows across state borders to slaughterhouses, resulting in horrendous suffering for the animals. Further, the cows' eyes are rubbed with chilli powder and their tails are broken to keep them moving while they're being walked to their final destination.
PETA is not just a barking dog with no bite - one of its recent victories came when after a PETA campaign, GAP Inc, the US's second largest clothing retailer, stopped using leather made from animals killed in India.
