India and France have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to promote cooperation in the Information Technology sector, media reports say. The MOU emphasises a range of areas, including e-commerce, IT enabled services, software development and telemedicine.
The Indian Minister for IT, Pramod Mahajan, and the French Minister for Foreign Trade, Francois Huwart, signed the agreement. And stressing that this was not just a another political exercise, Mr Mahajan was quoted as saying, "We have signed an MoU but this agreement will not be worth the paper it's written on unless we can guarantee its implementation. We must transform this MoU into an MoI - memorandum of implementation. And the IT industry in both our countries will have to make this happen."
France's IT imports from India are worth about US $28 million, a tiny fraction of India's total IT exports - US $ 4 billion.
