The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington DC is creating a Sikh heritage project, the Asian Age reports. The project, which has the cooperation of Pakistan’s Punjab History Board, is a result of initiatives by NRIs and prominent India-based Sikhs.According to the newspaper, the project’s immediate goal is “to identify, interpret and bring to light Sikh materials within the existing collections of the Smithsonian and other institutions in Washington”. The further goal is to acquire “significant Sikh objects”, especially those whose “preservation might be threatened in their current locations”.
Office space for the project has been assigned in the Smithsonian building across Capitol Hill in the city. The Smithsonian will also offer research opportunities in the form of post-doctoral fellowships and student internships.
