BBC reports that an interesting knee length women’s dress in a fashion show has sparked a controversy and debate in India. The design of the dress consists of horizontal strips of orange, white and green and a blue wheel (Ashoka Chakra), resembling the pattern of the Indian flag. One may recall that an Indian law regulates the use and display of the national flag. The law bars the use of the flag in advertisements or for any other commercial activity. In fact, even private citizens are not allowed to fly the flag over their homes, offices or factories except on certain designated days like the Republic Day or the Independence Day.
The designer has been sued for disrespecting the national flag. BBC also reports that the controversial dress was seized from the show.
Apparently the government is working on changing the law to permit the use of flag by the public as long as it is treated with respect. Several people protested against the fashion show.
One wonders if the model wearing the dress was also liable for an arrest on the premise of disrespecting the national flag.
