Based on news media reports, Satveer Chaudhary, 31, an Indian American is gearing up to be the youngest
member of the Minnesota Senate. Chaudhary knows that his community's support could take him closer to that dream.
A two-term state legislator, Chaudhary is busy mobilizing support from the
Indian American community and has also made it a point to focus on local
rather than US foreign policy issues. Chaudhary, who is in fact one of the only two Indian American state
legislators in the country - the other being Democrat Kumar Barve who
represents Montgomery County, Maryland -- will be up against Republican Dan
Coughlin, who has served as mayor of Mounds View in Minnesota for the past
18 months.
Chaudhary has been quoted in news media saying that his relative youth would
reflect and necessarily mean a fresh, energetic Senate campaign, sans all negative tactics.
He has also stated it's been a privilege to serve for two terms, and would be an even greater honor
to bring young blood to the state Senate. He also quoted that his campaign is now
well underway, and he had already knocked on almost all doors in Mounds
View.
Chaudhary, who is single, takes immense pride in his community involvement,
and is a member and active participant is virtually every organization in
his district - from the New Brighton Eagles and Family Center to the
Citizens Police Academy and the Columbia Heights Lions Club to the Fridley
Human Resources Commission.
He officially filed his candidacy in early July for the Minnesota state
Senate that will be vacated by Senator Steve Novak, a Democrat who has
represented New Brighton for the past 20 years.
A lifetime resident of Fridley, he attended Columbia Heights High School and
graduated from St Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, with a bachelor's
degree in political science. He then enrolled in the University of Minnesota
Law School from where he received a law degree.
