Supporters of recent coup leader George Speight have since late Thursday
been rounding Ethnic Indians in Fiji. According to an AFP report, this is
in retaliation for the recent arrest of coup leader George Speight. The AFP
report states that rebels were systematically picking up Indian from the
northern town of Labasa. They drove through town picking looking for males
from different families and around 200 men are reported to be held so far.
Hundreds of Indians are also reported to having fled to the jungles.
Every since the May 19th coup in which democratically elected prime minister
Mahendra Choudhry was taken hostage, the Indian community in Fiji is facing
growing intimidation. Indian owned shops and businesses have been
plundered, and there are moves to change the constitution such that power is
controlled by ethnic Fijians.
