Two Indians Aruna Roy and Jockin Arputham, are among the five winners of
this years Ramon Magsaysay award. According to a BBC report, Aruna Roy has
been rewarded for her work in empowering villagers in Rajasthan to stand up
for their rights. Jockin Arputham founder of India's National Slum Dwellers
Federation, wins the award for his efforts to help poor communities in other
parts of Asia and South Africa.
The other winners of the prestigious award this year include Jesse Robredo a
former Philippine town mayor, Liang Congjie a Chinese environmentalist and
Atmakusumah Astraatmadja an Indonesian journalist.
The award which is widely considered the Asian version of the Nobel prize is
named after former Philippine president Ramon Magsaysay who died in a plane
crash in 1957. The five winners will receive their awards in a ceremony on
31 August, Ramon Magsaysay's birthday.
