One Indian soldier was killed and seven other Indian soldiers were injured
during the weekend rescue operation to free Indian soldiers. The soldiers
had been besieged by Revolutionary United Front (RUF) rebels in Eastern
Sierra Leone for about two months. UN officials had earlier claimed that
there were no fatalities in this rescue mission.
The mission while securing the release of the soldiers had also destroyed
the rebel headquarters and had captured arms and ammunition. The UN force
in Sierra Leone is 13,000 strong, and is headed by Indian Major General
Vijay Jetley.
