Elephant race in Germany
|
|
Despite protests by animal rights groups, more than 40,000 spectators
watched Europe's first elephant race. According to the BBC, the race was
the brainchild of Ravindra Gujjulla Indian born mayor of Altlandsberg, a
town to the east of Berlin. The race was held in Berlin's Hoppergarten and
featured African and Asian circus elephants. The race course was 300 metres
which the elephants covered in about a minute. On completing the race the
animals were treated to fruits and vegetables.
The race was however controversial with members of the Animal Peace group
objecting to the race. They were supported among other celebrities by
Maneka Gandhi , India's Social Affairs Minister. The protesters raised
banners and some even chained themselves together at the racecourse. This
however did not stop the event.
