Taking Science to remote villages

An retired NRI couple Pushpa and Madhukar Deshpande are the driving force behind an innovative project which takes modern science to rural children. According to a report in The Hindu newspaper, the couple started this project in 1995 soon after returning to Pune after a long stay abroad.

The project named Vidnyanvahini was initially funded by the Canadian government but now consists of donations within India and from NRI's. During the past five years, Vidnyanvahini has travelled 68,000 km covering 308 schools in Maharashtra. More than 55,000 students have been part of this learning-on-wheels experience.

The Deshpandes can contacted via e-mail at: madhu36@vsnl.com or by visiting their web site http://members.aol.com/Vvahini
