It was 22 years ago in January 1978 that an US president last visited India.
Along with meeting the then Prime Minister Morarji Desai and other dignitaries,
President Jimmy Carter had found time to visit a village in Haryana that was
then called Daulatpur Naseerabad. President Carter had special ties to that
village - his mother Lillian Carter had served as a nurse there.
It was a warm and affectionate welcome that the Carters had received in that
village, so much so that the president had later written that it was "one of
the high points" of his overseas travels. This warm sentiment was mutual,
as the village folk decided to rename their village to 'Carterpuri' in honour
of president Carter.
This time around President Clinton will not be visiting Carterpuri. He will
nevertheless visit another village in a different state. This time the
privilege goes to Dhoblai village in Rajasthan. Are we going to witness a
repeat of that warmth that was evident during the previous American presidential
visit to a Indian village? Will we see another village being renamed, this
time to Clintonpuri?
