Hyderabad has thrown out beggars and hawkers in preparation for Clinton’s visit, the UK’s Sunday Times reported yesterday. The newspaper said that about 3,000 beggars were driven out of town, and quoted a civil rights activist as saying, “Everyone out on the streets is being targeted: the beggars, the street children, the lepers, even hawkers. These people just don’t fit in with the image the city is trying to project.”
The paper also quoted police sources, saying that the beggars have been dumped on the outskirts of the city or taken to their villages.
