This week we find two detailed and informative reports on the Indian diaspora
in two prestigious publications. The first report published on March 15th in
the Washington Post is on the Indian community in Kenya. The second report
published by MSNBC on the 16th of March features the Indian community in the
US. Both articles trace the fascinating journey of Indian immigrants in a
new land. Contrasting the two communities which start with common roots,
but evolve under very different conditions makes for interesting reading.
The Washington Post article is titled - A New View of Kenya's 'Asians' - East
Indians, Who Shunned Spotlight, Featured in Museum Exhibit.
This article is a report on the "The Asian African Heritage Exhibition" currently
being held at the "National Museum of Kenya". The Indian community in
Kenya started their journey in the 19th century as indentured laborers under the
British. Despite the prejudice that the community continually faces, it is very successful and today own a number of the bigger companies in Kenya.

The MSNBC article is titled - "From ‘Little India’ to Washington " - Asian
Indians in U.S. begin testing the political waters
This article is part of a series that MSNBC is featuring on India and Indians.
This is in the context of American president Bill Clinton's visit to India
this weekend. Again the article traces the origins of the community to its
prsent day avatar. The Indian community in the US is much younger than the
one in Kenya, with most of the emigration to the US happening only since the
middlle of the nineteen sixties. Unlike the Indians in Kenya, most of the immigrants
to the US start with good education, and typically continue for a higher
education and then settle comfortably to a good job.
The article also comments on the wealth of this community, and of late of its
political aspirations.
