The BBC world service reported today that the Malaysian government is urging
Indian Muslims not to go to back to India to find wives for fear that local
women of this community are left stranded.
In this relatively small Indian muslim community of about half a million,
it is common for men to return to India to find suitable brides. One of the
causes cited for this phenomenon is that the women of the community are often
better educated than their male counterparts, as they tend to join family
business quickly. Parents of brides are reluctant to accept grooms with lower
educational qualifications. The parents are also accused of being too picky
in wanting the groom to be from the same locality in India and hence share
common cuisine and cultural traditions.
The larger Indian hindu community apparently does not face as big a problem in
this arena. The Malaysian government is doing its bit to discourage the
phenomenon of importing brides, stating that local brides will circumvent
legal problems of visa's and passports that are required for foreign spouses.
The government is also concerned that instilling national pride in foreign
spouses takes a long time.
