According to a Reuters report, an Austrian firm, which Austrian prosecutors
declined to name, is suspected of selling blood to India and China that was
not checked for hepatitis or the HIV virus which can cause AIDS.
The firm was suspected of marketing the blood from donor centres in the
United States and Africa as a medical product without carrying out the
necessary checks for hepatitis or HIV. The blood apparently would have been
suitable for laboratory research but fetched a higher price when sold for
medical applications.
The investigation, which had been going on for three years, could take
another 12 months to complete. The Austrian company in question went
bankrupt in 1997.
