Indians rank fourth in legal immigration to the US

Indians rank fourth in legal immigration to the US according to a Washington Post report on global migration patterns. Quoting sources from the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service and the International Labor Organization, the report stated that India is a source for 4.8% of legal immigration to the US.

The main source of immigrants to the US are Mexico (18.4%), Phillipines (6.2%) and China (5.2). Vietnam shares the fourth position with India at 4.8%.

According to the report based on data from 152 countries, there are currently about 120 million migrants in the world, up from 75 million in 1965. This figure is expected to grow further.

Another interesting statistic from the report was the labor cost per hour for the years 1980 and 1995. While the cost of labor has gone up greatly in dollar terms in all countries (except China where it remained static) , it has actually gone down for Indian labor from $0.44 to $0.25. This can perhaps be explained by the significant depreciation of the Indian rupee against the dollar during this period.

Australia at 25%, Canada at 18.5% and Austria with 10.0% topped the countries with the highest foreign labor force. They were followed by the US, Germany, France, Britain and Italy.
