Salman Rushdie, 53, has a new woman in his life, the UK's Sunday Times reports. The thrice-married author is going out with Padma Lakshmi, a 29-year-old model. He apparently became the talk of New York when he escorted Padma to parties in the city.
Padma, who lives in Los Angeles, grew up in Chennai and moved with her mother to New York and then California. She studied drama in New England, and went in her final year to Madrid, where a photographer persuaded her to pose. She then moved to Milan, and became one of Italy's top fashion models by the mid-1990s.
Just less than a month back, Rushdie was quoted as saying that his third wife, Elizabeth West, was "the most important person in my life." The Sunday Times said that West will not be joining Rushdie in New York.
The newspaper also reported that Rushdie is planning to move from England to New York because he feels more at home there.
