India has become stricter about enforcing the ban on Indian maids after reports of domestic workers being abused in Kuwait, the Indian Ambassador said on Wednesday.
"The ban was first announced in June 1999. We are seeing a lot of problems here and we have some 150 maids right now in an embassy shelter," he was quoted as saying.
The ambassador, Mr Prabhu Dayal, added: ''Agents bring (Indian) maids here, then they find they do not have a job, or do not give them a proper salary and sometimes they beat them."
About 100,000 of the 285,000 Indians who live in Kuwait are domestic servants, according to Reuters.
