The majority of respondents - over 50% - to our opinion poll say they are angry with the Indian government for not allowing dual nationality. However, a substantial proportion of respondents – over 35% - feel that the ban should not be lifted. Clearly, dual nationality is an emotive issue. There are many NRIs who have forgone the chance to have a foreign passport – and all the convenience this usually implies – to hang on to their Indian citizenship. And equally, there are NRIs who switch to having a foreign passport to not only feel a greater sense of belonging to their host country, but also to get rid of the “hassles” that come with presenting an Indian passport to a suspecting immigration official.
Given the backing of such heavyweights such as Infosys CEO N R Narayanamurthy, the Indian government’s reaction to this debate remains be seen.
