Prior to the conference inauguration, a scheduled GOPIO session on the Indian diaspora and global media will be held at 4 p.m. to openly discuss and deliberate on the role of global media in the diaspora. The theme of GOPIO Mumbai conference on the 6th of January, 2005 is 'India and NRIs/PIOs ' Role, Relationship and Responsibility. Based on this larger theme, there would be three conference sessions which will be held at Taj President Hotel.
1. Indian Diaspora - Social, Political and Economic Issues
2. GOPIO.Connect - Developmental, Philanthropic and Educational Activities
3. Business, Technology and Investments
The first session will be devoted to issues of concern to the global NRI/PIO communities while, the second session will address NRI/PIOs involvement in helping in developmental, philanthropic and educational activities. The last session pertains to business, technology and investments for which speakers from India and various parts of the world would be addressing the delegates.
Another special feature for the Mumbai conference would be to present five selected charitable organizations with Rs. 5 lakhs for monthly stipend to widows. Panchal Association of California would be assisting GOPIO for identifying the NGOs and raising necessary funds.
'We at GOPIO believe that the NRIs/PIOs have contributed significantly to the countries of their adoption as well as to India, and have added a special glitter to the resurgence of India,' said Inder Singh, President of GOPIO. GOPIO believes that the destiny of the Indian diaspora, in many ways, is intertwined inextricably with India. The NRIs/PIOs certainly, individually and collectively, have made numerous achievements in their adopted lands but they are bound to India by the umbilical cord of history, culture, heritage, and tradition.
Since its inception in 1989, GOPIO has been organizing conferences and conventions in different parts of the world to mobilize the global NRI/PIO community. In 2004 alone, we have had three conferences, in January 2004 in New Delhi, in March 2004, in New York on Human Rights and in October 2004 in Brussels on Trade and Technology, where Honorable Jagdish Tytler, Minister for Overseas Indians Affairs, was the Chief Guest. The conference in Mumbai on January 5th and 6th, 2005, is another of its continuing efforts to mobilize the global Indian community and facilitate their networking.
The conference shall conclude with the Awards banquet scheduled at 7 p.m. on Jan 6, 2005 at Taj President Hotel. GOPIO PRAVASI COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARDS have been established to honor those NRIs and PIOs who have made significant contributions to the NRI/PIO communities around the globe and/or to India.
