Air India - Exploiting disabled and elderly people

From: Ashok Sanganee, UK

Subject: Air India - Exploiting disabled and elderly people

My elderly parents recently flew from London (UK) to Mumbai on Air India. When I dropped them off at Heathrow airport, I requested Air India to provide a wheelchair for my father, who is about 90 years old. The walk from the departure lounge to the aircraft gate is a long one at Heathrow, and hence, it is next to impossible for my father to walk the distance.

Air India did provide a wheelchair, but charged us £20 (about US $30) for the privilege. And yes, I was furnished with a proper receipt. My parents have travelled on other international airlines and have never been charged for a wheelchair.

I fail to understand why Air India charges for this service - are they trying to exploit passengers who are elderly or disabled? I usually don't have a problem with Air India - otherwise we wouldn't fly on the airline. But to be charged for a wheelchair – this smacks of either the usual public sector arrogance, or a pathetic attempt at making money in any way possible.
