ASHRAYA REPORT 2001-2002

Introduction :-
This year marks a milestone in Ashraya’s history, as it is the 20th year since our inception. Of the Founder Members, Rama, Shanthi and Nomita, still play an active role in the running of the organization. If we look back, in some ways, time has stood still, especially when it comes to certain set attitudes about Adoption. In other ways we have grown well beyond anything we had envisioned , when we started running our small Children’s Home in Lazar layout in 1982. Though the Adoption Programme takes up a great deal of our time and concentration, we can legitimately say that we are today, truly a “ Child Welfare Organisation ” and our focus remains on providing strong “ Non – institutional ” alternatives, for children in need. Our Women’s Centre provides a viable alternative for battered and abused and single women, who wish to keep their children and parent them, under our umbrella of support ; our mobile crèches give working mothers, on construction sites, a much needed respite and the opportunity to work and yet have their children in safe – care close by ; our Lost Child Programme has proved extremely effective in restoring children back to their families ; our strong presence in the Home Committee of the Observation Home has helped to invigorate a sluggish system ; Neelbagh, our rural school, provides a rare opportunity of a good schooling for poor children, while retaining strong links with their biological families ; our Children’s Home has grown from strength to strength and we can proudly say that we are able to find families for children with severe physical disabilities and for older children, who, but for our intervention, would remain in long – term institutional care.

To provide all these services and good quality care and intervention, in all our projects, we are deeply grateful to our partner agencies , who have had faith in us and with whom we have been privileged to work with for many years. The Swedish Adoption Centrum, WACAP and AIAA and our more recent partners, CIAI and ADAI, who not only work with us in our Adoption Programme, but help support our other services as well. ICARE, SIDA and The K.C. Mahindra Trust who along with CIAI, support our rural school. The Paul Hamlyn Foundation which helps us run our Women’s Centre. A.C Dalarna, Hebbal Schule and local contractors who support our Creche Programme. More than 200 individual donors support our Children’s Home and other projects. I must single out a very special support group, The Dubai Creek Round Table, comprising of many of our adoptive parents, who through innovative funding initiatives, have helped to raise substantial funds to finance the building of our High School at Neelbagh.

The Ashraya AGM was held on 2nd November 2001. We have had 4 committee meetings during the year under review.
